Environmental Organization Headquarters

Headquarters for Narragansett Bay - based environmental organization committed to stewardship of, and education about, the Bay.  Located on a former brownfield site, this project exemplified the organization's mission for restorative ecology, a high-performance building and site, and "living classroom" The site map is the foyer floor, providing every visitor with both solar and marine orientation.  Lauren Reiter was the Project Architect for this project, while a Vice Principal at Croxton Collaborative Architects. 

Rhode Island Environmental Organization Headquarters

Lolita Vinoteca & Asador (Restaurant)

The design imperative for this cozy and sophisticated urban restaurant was a space that highlighted the traditions and simplicity of Mediterranean cuisine, dominated by cooking on a wood-fired grill and a deep wine collection.  The small space (967 square feet) had to accomplish all of its work spaces within view of the 20-seat dining area and 10-seat bar.  Therefore,  all of the storage that is part of any restaurant - cooking equipment, prep areas, dishware, cooking supplies, wine, and more - became part of the design motif, with iconic red shelving running both sides of the length of the space.  Nothing is hidden, and all is part of the experience of eating at this delicious restaurant, with a huge focus on the custom-designed grill in full view.  The dining experience is further augmented by custom-designed lighting, casting a warm light on both diners and food.
 

 

You'll be greeted with the warm glow of our custom wood-fired grill and rough-hewn walls lined with Lolita’s thoughtfully curated wine collection. The setting is reminiscent of an Old World bodega where, throughout the day, neighbors and visitors alike gather to share some wine, snacks or a meal, and a lot of congenial conversation.

Forensics Science Center


Designed by Croxton Collaborative Architects, in association with Cecil Baker & Associates, the Forensic Science Center for the Philadelphia Police Department is a state-of-the-art forensics laboratory facility handling all crime scene evidence in Philadelphia (except homicide).  Lauren Reiter was the Project Architect for this important project, which was awarded as “Top Ten Green Buildings” in America by the AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) in 2006.  
The building is housed in an abandoned 1929 school building, which was located on a desolate and impermeable site.  The directive by the City was to provide a sustainable model for future City projects, including both site and building.  New high performance windows allowed the majority of personnel to work in a full-daylit environment  - very atypically for laboratory environments, particularly those including a firearms unit and shooting range; crime scene unit; chemistry laboratories for drug analysis; and criminalistics and DNA labs.
Among other challenges with this complex program, laboratory environments tend to be among the most energy-intensive building types – but in spite of this, the building achieves a 72% reduction in total annual source energy, and a 69% reduction in 25-year CO2 emissions.
The site was redesigned to manage 70% of precipitation on site with vegetation and vegetated swales improving the local micro-climate and providing habitat for indigenous flora and fauna.


Coffee Shop

Multiple Environmental Organizations' Headquarters

Multiple Headquarters offices for several not-for-profit environmental organizations include (in order of pictures): Environmental Defense Fund; Beldon Fund; new Geochemistry Building for Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory; Natural Resources Defence Council; private Family Foundation.  The common thread of these projects include renovation of existing buildings and facilities to achieve high-performance sustainable design, working on extremely limited budgets, with prioritization given to both systems and public spaces.  Each of these headquarters integrated design components that were deeply associated with each group's mission and identity.   Lauren Reiter was Project Architect and/or Project Manager of these projects in her role as Vice Principal at Croxton Collaborative Architects. 

Brooklin General Store

This new general store replaced a beloved but derelict store that had served the town for more than 100 years.  More than most general stores, this store was truly the center of the town, serving both residents and visitors alike, and providing supplies to the community without having to travel multiple miles to the nearest grocery store or gas station.  Located at the physical center of the town, the new energy-efficient store has replicated the service model of the original, while providing a bright new dining area, a professional kitchen, expanded retail areas and a new front porch to provide a connection to the neighbors going by.    

Bronx-based Community Center

The Mount Hope Community Center is a vital organization that serves multiple constituencies in the West Bronx.  Originally housed in multiple locations, the organization sought to unify its operations and services under one roof.  As many as 200 youths and adults use the programs daily, which primarily focus on youth services and economic development such as job training.  Additional goals were to have the building be as sustainable as possible and to provide outdoor areas within the building's walls.  All of this was to be accomplished with an extremely tight, "no frills" budget.    

Lauren Reiter, as Project Architect and Project Manager led the design team of Croxton Collaborative Architects in this ambitious project.  The 44,000 SF building, built on a vacant corner lot surrounded by apartment buildings, meets the project's "green" goals through incorporation of deep daylighting throughout the building, use of benign materials, expansive vegetated roof areas and a graywater system. 
The building feels very welcoming to the neighborhood, with its stepped geometry and grade level courtyard with trees.  Neighboring apartment building have views onto the vegetated roofs, and the stepped volumes minimize shadows on both the courtyard and the neighbors.  Furthering the greening of the neighborhood, street trees have been added around the perimeter of the site.
This project was the first in the Bronx to utilize New Market Tax Credits, a program that incentivizes community development and economic growth through the use of tax credits to attract private investments to distressed communities. 


NYC Environmental Organization Headquarters

The renovation of the 1890 George B. Post, Romanesque structure as Headquarters for the National Audubon Society (NAS) in New York City, became one of the benchmark, leadership projects in the early years of LEED, demonstrating that a turn of the century building could be converted into one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable buildings in America at the time
it was renovated in 1992.  At almost 100,000 SF including the new penthouse on the roof level, the complete gut renovation of the building set new standards for energy efficiency, indoor air quality, comprehensive workplace equality; dramatic reduction of emissions contributing to global warming and acid rain; massive energy savings compared to other construction at the time.  Winner of countless awards, this project "walked the walk" of a national environmental organization who sought to make their headquarters a replicable model for all.  Lauren Reiter was the Project Architect for this project, while a Vice Principal at Croxton Collaborative Architects. 

Memorial Sloan Kettering: Satellite Treatment Facility

Lauren Reiter, as a Vice Principal at Croxton Collaborative Architects was Project Architect and/or Project Manager for many of the firm's most important projects including several shown here.  In order, these include writing the building program for the  redevelopment of the World Trade Center, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11; development of Memorial Sloan Kettering's first off-campus independent chemotherapy treatment center (photos were not allowed of the completed facility); headquarters offices including a screening room for Corsair PIctures, a motion picture company; design of the Unum campus new headquarters building; design of the Intitule of the Environment at Rutgers University; all new interior furniture as part of the high-performance St. Lawrence University new Science building.
Subsequent photos show selected Reiter Architecture & Design projects, including the expansion of services for 'The Shop', the Portland oyster emporium; Master Planning and a new Special Science Projects facility for George Stevens Academy in Blue Hill, Maine; renovation of a 19th C. two-room schoolhouse into the Town Offices for Brooklin, Maine, including ADA access.
